CXO 2.0 Reaches First Development Milestone

CXO 2, the second generation of Skycoin’s immutable object library, has reached the first development milestone toward its full launch later this year! CXO 2 represents a monumental upgrade to the previous version of CXO; it is a critical component of the Skycoin ecosystem, and forms one of the key components of the forthcoming Obelisk consensus protocol.

CXO 2 is a sophisticated data sharing and storage system, enabling users to share file structures (from a single file to a whole directory tree) by means of a default file transfer application. A local copy of the file remains with the user, and anyone who has requested a copy, or “subscribed”, will receive an identical copy of the file in their own local home folders. Whenever a change is made to the original file, only the delta from the original file, (only the portion that has changed), is downloaded to subscribers’ folders. This saves users from downloading the same data multiple times, and leads to a massive reduction in bandwidth use across the network. The ability to share files in a fast, reliable, encrypted, anonymous, and completely decentralized way has massive implications and incredible potential for future application development.

Introduction

Premise: Computer = Calculation + Storage + Network.

On the most basic level, a computer is anything that processes data. It can be a physical device, like a PC, or an abstract, virtual system involved in information processing. Every computer consists of three elements: a CPU, a hard disk, and a network card.

All computer hardware, virtualization, and computer languages include these elements, which allow computers to process data sets. However, decentralized systems pose different challenges for information processing. When data is not centralized in any one location, it can become inconsistent. Decentralized networks have the added challenge of maintaining data consistency during processing.

Skycoin BBS v5.0 has finally been released with many changes under the hood!

Thin Client

The most apparent change of all, is the introduction of the thin client. You can now access Skycoin BBS without setting up a node! Just head to bbs.skycoin.com.

In previous versions, one can only (and should only) access/submit content via a web user interface that is served locally. As this web-interface (and the API that it calls) has direct control over the node itself, and signs content with private keys that are stored in-node (or server-side), it is not appropriate to expose it to the public.

Skycoin BBS v4.1 has been released!

Change Log

User interface improvements.
Implemented service discovery (connections to other nodes are now automatically managed).
Improved remote submission of board content (implemented via service discovery).
Simplified process of board creation and hosting.
Improvements to CXO data structure.

Skycoin BBS v3.1 has finally been released!

Changelog

Updated to use latest CXO.
Reimplemented CXO data structure for easier diff management.
Introduction of a views module for easier implementation of different ways of viewing data.
Implemented exporting/importing boards to/from file.
Initial implementation of following/avoiding users.
Improved UI (Work in progress).
Automatic peer-to-peer relay of boards.

Skycoin BBS Development Update #2

It’s been a bit more than a month since the release of version 0.1, and 0.2 is soon to be ready!

The changes are the following:

Uses the latest CXO version (peer to peer self-replicating database).
Reimplementation of CXO objects and tree (in preparation for new features).
Introduction to a views module for easy implementation of different ways of “viewing” content.
Initial implementation of user following/avoiding.
Completely revamped UI.

CXO Changes

CXO has been seriously refactored to be faster and more stable. The API has been made to work with hash arrays better - with constant time access, faster replication and the ability to access an element directly with a given hash.

Skycoin/CXO vs FileCoin/IPFS

We have been asked what is the difference between CXO and IPFS.

File Coin has the same objectives as a part of the Skycoin infrastructure, but is taking a different approach. They have three separate protocols:

IPLD
IPFS
Multi-formats

where,

IPLD is a representation language for immutable data objects and hashes.
IPFS is a file system
Mult-formats is a self describing data standard

In Skycoin, CXO does all three of those

An Introduction

BBS stands for Bulletin Board System. Although traditional BBS systems are no longer widely used, BBS in the modern era is an icon for social services.

Skycoin BBS is one of the first web applications to be implemented using the skycoin ecosystem. Skycoin attempts to revolutionize the internet; decentralizing it and encrypting protocols by default.

Underlying Skycoin BBS is a peer-to-peer self-replicating database named CXO (part of the Skycoin ecosystem). It features immutable tree structures of Golang objects. All objects are referenced via their hashes alongside defined schemata. Each tree has a root object and signed against a public/private key pair. To update the tree, roots have incremental versions called “sequences”. This design allows for fast, bandwidth efficient data replication.
